| This is Mrs. Davis' fifth year of teaching and she feels very blessed to be a part of the St. Agnes community. After working in the business world for 20 years, she finally followed her "calling" and went back to college to earn her second degree in Elementary Education from the University of Saint Mary. In her spare time she enjoys reading, going to the lake, and spending time with her family. Mrs. Davis resides in Kansas City, Kansas with her husband, Micky.
Important Information!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Weekly Newsletter! COMING SOON!...there we will be sharing more information regarding the 4th grade! It will be in your child's Friday Folder.
Please check Edline often!...Your student's grades will be updated once a week. This is a great tool to monitor your child's progress. Please check your child's grades for all subjects often, in addition to looking over the graded work in the Friday Folder packets.
Transition to 4th Grade & 5th Grade...Click on the downloadable file at the bottom of this page to view information distributed at the Transition Meeting held on September 4th.
Absences...It is very important that students be on time and present. Students should be ready to begin the school day at 8:00 a.m. sharp. If your child must be absent, please make arrangements to pick-up his/her homework that same day whenever possible.
Good Health...Please send a healthy snack and a water bottle with your child each day. Be sure that your child gets a good night's sleep and breakfast to begin each day. Be sure to know what kind of weather to expect each day so that your child is appropriately dressed for the outdoors. We will go outside for recess most days!
Reading Programs...Mrs. Stuart and I are always looking for ways to encourage our 4th graders to read. The more they read, the better readers they become!
In addition to the 4th & 5th grade reading program, each 4th grade class is trying to read 100 books by the end of December. If we meet our goal, Scholastic publishers will donate 100 books to needy children.
Beginning October 1st through the month of March, we will also be participating in the Book It program offered by Pizza Hut. Students will choose a reading goal each month, and if the goal is met, the student will earn a certificate for a free personal pan pizza. If students are reading 15 minutes each night, the goal is very attainable.
Challenges like these motivate students to get interested in reading, and develop lifelong reading habits! Our hope, however, is that students realize that reading for pleasure is its own reward!
What We're Working On...
NOTE: Due to the snow day on 12/11, test dates have been pushed back one day. We will try to follow the test scheduled as follows:
Religion: We are participating in Advent prayers and activities as we prepare for the birth of Jesus. Also, the students are working on their saint projects. We are looking forward to Katie D's presentation of St. Mildred on December 10th, and Noah's presentation of St. Thomas on December 17th. Elaina E.(8th), Katie F.(14th) and Julie (22nd) will be the first reports in January after Christmas break.
Math: We are reviewing properties of multiplication and addition and fact families. There will be a TEST on Monday, December 17th. Next week we will multiply money, and practice making change up to $20.00. During the next few months, after Christmas break, we will study geometry, including transformations and plane figures, and customary & metric measurement.
Reading: We are reading the novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". We are completing lots of FUN activities, including chocolate recipes and candy inventions! The comprehension and vocabulary TEST for chapters 19-30 will be Thursday, December 20th. We will read the novel, "Sarah, Plain and Tall" next month.
Spelling: There are 15 spelling words each week that correlate with our novel study of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". There will be 15-20 words each week for "Sarah, Plain and Tall".
English: We are working on our candy inventions. Students will design a wrapper, and write an advertisement for their new candy. The candy invention wrappers are due Tuesday, 12/18. We'll study nouns in January!
Social Studies: We are studying the Middle West. The TEST will be Tuesday, Dec. 18th. Students should be reviewing all states & capitals we've learned so far (includes southwest, southeast, mortheast, and middle west regions). This cumulative TEST will be Wednesday, Dec. 19th. Check-out the link at the bottom of this page for tips for studying for social studies tests. After Christmas break, we will study the state of Kansas.
Science: Our field trip to Earthworks is December 6th. Students are studying habitats; they have each been assigned a scientific job, and an animal to research. We'll study light and the eye in January.
Homework:
Students should have about 45 minutes of homework each night. If it is considerably more or considerably less on most nights, please let me know and we will make adjustments as needed.
Remember to keep checking your child's planner and RAM's sheet each night. Homework is posted on a board in the classroom each day. Students are given 10-15 minutes at the end of each day to fill-out their planners and RAM's sheets. If homework is not fully complete, the student will receive a check and will have to finish the homework assignment that evening. A "late" penalty of 20% off the final grade for the assignment will be taken as well.
Organization is Key! Every night the following should be signed and returned the next day:
* planner (check the homework to make sure it is complete)
* RAMS sheet
* reading log
* Friday Folder (returned on Mondays)
Weekly Assignments:
Math: The students will be given a Power Drill worksheet with 25 math computation problems every Monday. The assignment will be due that Wednesday. I will check it and give it back to the students to make corrections. Corrections will be due each Friday. Students should be studying their basic facts nightly until they are memorized!!! This includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Use flash cards, internet sites (some are listed below), or spend some time as you are driving in the car quizzing your child.
Spelling: A spelling pretest will be given every Monday. The test will be given on Fridays. The students will complete spelling practice activities each week. In addition, you can find spelling practice ideas by clicking on the downloadable file at the bottom of this page.
Reading: On Friday of each week the students will take a comprehension and vocabulary test that covers the story we read during the week. The night before the test, students should study the vocabulary words and re-read the story. Students should read at least 15 minutes each night and record it in the reading log. Please refer to the reading program by clicking on the downloadable file at the bottom of this page.
