Position Overview

The music director at St Agnes Parish plans music for Saturday evening and Sunday morning Masses plus special seasonal and sacramental celebrations, conducts the adult and children’s choir, and serves as music coordinator for parish weddings and funerals. In addition, s/he is responsible for collaborating with the clergy, staff, cantors, keyboardists, and other ensemble directors of the parish and school, and for administering music program details related to the above liturgies.

Responsibilities:

Ministries

Serve as principal parish organist/pianist – Play for 2-3 Masses per weekend

  • Review, select, and prepare organ/piano music in advance
  • Play for other liturgies as appropriate

Plan the music for, and recruit, schedule, and rehearse (as appropriate) volunteer and paid music ministers for the following parish liturgies

  • Five Weekend Masses (Sat 4:30pm; Sun 8:00, 10:00, [12:00pm & 5:30pm may be reinstated at a later date])
  • Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (Eve 4:00 pm, 6:00 pm; Day 8:00 am, 10:00 am)
  • Ash Wednesday (12:10 and 5:30pm)
  • Holy Week
  • Confirmation
  • Holy days of Obligation (5:30pm vigil, 12:10pm, 5:30pm)
  • Other parish liturgies as appropriate (e.g., 9:00am Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving)

Collaborate with engaged couples and families in planning music and engaging musicians for Weddings & Funerals(Work not compensated by the church)

Prepare music ministers for parish liturgies.                                      

Conduct the St Agnes Adult Choir, Bell Choir, and Children’s Choir.

Rehearse with (as appropriate) cantors, organists and pianists, other instrumentalists, and choirs.

Coordinate/Evaluate/Train/Develop the musical skill of all parish musicians, paid and volunteer

Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings

Collaborate with Clergy and, as necessary, liturgical ministry liaisons regarding liturgical preparation and ministry scheduling

Collaborate with School Religion Teachers, Religious Ed Teachers, and Parish Ministries Manager regarding sacramental preparation and other formation events and liturgies

Collaborate with Marriage Preparation Coordinator regarding the wedding calendar, engaged couple contact information, wedding music policy, etc.

Collaborate with Pastor and Parish Ministries Manager regarding funeral music policy

Collaborate with School Music Teachers regarding School Mass Music, parish music for mass parts, 
music copyright reports, Catholic Schools week Sunday mass

Nurture good communication and relationships among all members of the music ministry, clergy, staff, lay ministers, school, and parish-at-large

Review, select, and prepare music for any ensemble conducted by the music director

Design and print worship aids for Parish Penance Services, Christmas Mass, Easter Mass, Confirmation Mass, First Holy Communion and other services as appropriate

Draft and maintain a music ministry budget subject to review by the Business Manager and Finance Council

Maintain annual copyright licenses and prepare monthly copyright reports for Church and School (in collaboration with school music teachers)

Maintain choral library (sorting, stamping, filing)

Oversee maintenance of all church owned musical instruments in church (including watering sanctuary piano) and stone chapel (excluding handbells)

Advertise through appropriate communication vehicles all events, programs or news related to St Agnes Music Ministry

Maintain updated information on the Website for pages related to the Music Ministries

Serve as host and make welcome all guest musicians as appropriate for special services such as weddings or funerals, and during personal vacation times.

Program the carillon system seasonally

Coordinate special programs within music ministry as appropriate

Other duties as appropriate Personal/Professional Growth

Spend time in personal preparation for liturgies

Maintain familiarity with Church documents and other resources relating to liturgy and music

Be committed to one’s own spiritual/professional growth through participation in meetings, conferences and workshops concerning current trends in the field of Liturgy and Music
