St. Agnes Montessori Classroom

In the Montessori classroom the children have the opportunity to learn the same subjects they would learn in any other program.  At the preschool level, the child develops social, emotional, and perceptual skills. Numerals, lettters and sounds are introduced.   The Pre-K children begin/review sounds of letters, names to lower and upper case letters, math and beginning reading. Kindergartners become more involved with histroy, science and geography, while working on higher level math, reading and writing sentences. Kindergartners will follow the same curriculum as the traditional kindergartners, but they will learn these skills using the

Montessori Method.  The Montessori curriculum is organized around specific teaching materials which are developmentally sequenced.  The program is based upon the principle of freedom and choice, rather than on set times. It is also designed to develop independence and responsibility.  The organization of the classroom, the method of teaching, and the practical life activities are oriented toward helping the child become self-sufficient and a disciplined individual.
